Few wildlife encounters compare to standing a few meters from an endangered mountain gorilla in the misty forests of northern Rwanda. On this Rwanda gorilla trekking tour, you hike into Volcanoes National Park to spend an hour with a habituated gorilla family, while we arrange the permits, lodges, transport and Kigali airport transfers for you.
Why trek gorillas in Volcanoes National Park
Volcanoes National Park, in Musanze District, is one of the few places on Earth where mountain gorillas still live wild. It sits in the Virunga Massif, a chain of volcanic peaks that Rwanda shares with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The park is a roughly two-to-three-hour drive from Kigali, so you can fly in and reach the gorillas within a day or two. That makes Rwanda one of the easiest places in Africa to plan a gorilla trek.
The experience also supports the animals you come to see. Permit fees fund anti-poaching work and conservation, and a share of the revenue goes to the communities living around the park.
What is included in your tour
We handle the logistics that make a gorilla trek hard to arrange on your own, so you only need to show up ready to hike.

Secured for your chosen date, the hardest part of the trip to arrange independently.
Lodges
Accommodation near Volcanoes National Park, matched to your comfort level and budget.
Transport
A comfortable vehicle and an experienced driver-guide between Kigali, the park and your lodge.
Airport transfers
Pickup and drop-off at Kigali International Airport.
Because every traveler is different, we tailor the itinerary to your dates and interests. You can add other experiences in Rwanda or extend the trip to Uganda, Kenya or Tanzania.
A day of gorilla trekking
Your trek day starts early, with a briefing at the park headquarters in Kinigi around 7:00 AM.
- Briefing and group assignment. Park rangers explain the rules and match you to a gorilla family based on your fitness and preferences.
- The hike. Guides and trackers lead you through farmland and bamboo forest toward the family's last known location. The walk can last from under an hour to several hours, depending on where the gorillas are that day.
- One hour with the gorillas. Once you find them, you spend one hour watching them feed, play and rest, from a respectful distance.
- Return to your lodge. Your driver takes you back for a hot meal and a rest.
Bring a camera, but turn off the flash. The gorillas are the point, and the rangers will tell you how close you can safely get.
Gorilla permits and cost
A gorilla trekking permit for international visitors costs USD 1,500 per person, set by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB). Rwandans and East African Community citizens pay USD 200, and other African citizens USD 500, under promotional rates RDB announced for 2026 (source).
Permits are limited. Volcanoes National Park has 12 habituated gorilla families with eight permits per family per day, so only 96 people can trek each day (source). Many guides recommend booking three to six months ahead, and earlier for peak months (source).
When you book with us, we reserve your permit for you and confirm your trek date before we finalize lodges and transport. Prices and promotions can change, so we confirm current rates when you request a quote.

What to pack and how to prepare
The trails are steep, muddy and often wet, so pack for changing mountain weather and a moderately demanding hike.
- Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good grip
- Long trousers and a long-sleeved shirt
- A light waterproof jacket or poncho
- Gardening or work gloves for steep sections
- Hat, sunscreen and insect repellent
- A refillable water bottle
- Camera or phone with spare batteries, no flash
Basic fitness helps, since the hike can be long on some days. Porters are available in the park to carry your bag and give you a hand on steep sections, and hiring one also supports local families. Tell us about any mobility concerns when you book, and we will plan around them.
